screen shots from i knew you were trouble

Here are some screen shots that i have took as inspiration from taylor swifts music video, i knew you were trouble. i feel that because me and my partner have chosen a higher aged target audience we feel that we want to incorporate that into our music video, i think the shots we see in Taylor's video will  fit well with our own narrative obviously we wont be completely coping the shots from her music video. but i think it would look really good in our own. as we have already decided that one of our locations is going to be in a bedroom. also what we see really fits with what we here from the lyrics.

equipment

There are various reasons why we have chosen the equipment we have, to make our music video we are using the DSLR camera because of the high quality footage we can collect from it, zooming in and out and focusing of specific features of objects whilst filming. the tripod is to make sure that whilst filming we are able to keep the camera still and so there are no wobbles or shakes. the dolly we have chosen to you is purposely because some of the shots we need to film may involve pan and tracking so the best way to do that and make it look effective and high quality is to use the dolly making sure there are no errors.

magazine practice shots

Here are two practice shots i have done for my magazine advert i have chosen these to shots based on the research i have done of taylor swifts album covers and other magazine adverts from female pop solo artists. i have not decided yet if i am going to use these actual pictures or do another shoot yet but i feel that these two photo's are really nice and would represent a female pop artist in the magazine artist. i have chosen these photography these to shots due to some of the reasons i state in the pervious post below, after taking various different shot types i have chosen to go with a mid shot which is normally the shot types in magazine adverts other than a close up. but i have decided against the black back ground and going to go with white instead.

two main characters

Above is the two performers that we have chosen for our music video (hanney and sam), these are just two main characters in our music video, we will have lots of other extra's but the narrative is based upon hanney and sams relationship and how it changes throughout the music video.

Feedback sheet

My teacher has given this feedback sheet to me after looking at all my research that i have done for my chosen genre, music video and artist. my research has enabled me to now start planning my own music video. after reading what my teacher has put in the feedback sheet i now know what i need to improve on in order to achieve the highest grade possible.  some of my posts i need to go back and add more detail to and research into specific areas. which will later on help me when planning and producing my music video.

Dear Big Machine records,

Hi, i am a student from John Cabot academy in Kingswood bristol, and currently studying A level media studies, and for our courswork project we have been given the oppertunity to make our own music video's me and my partner have formed a record label ............ records.

After intensive research we have now decided that we would like to use Taylor Swifts song ' I knew you were trouble' for our music, Which is why i am writing too you, I am hoping for your premission to use her song ' i knew you were trouble' for our A level media studies coursework project to ensure that there will be copyright issues. I assure you that the music video me and my partner will produce will not be used to make any profitt at all. And will not involve any inapproipate content in. Therefor I hope that you take in consideration  what i have just wrote and allow us to use Taylor's song as will feel like it is the best suited song for our music video.

yours sincerly,

our pitch

Today after pitching our initial idea's to the class, we have a strong idea of what we are going to do for our music video. After intensive research into Taylor swifts i knew you were trouble music video, we know that our narrative must be the strongest part of our music video as it is very much based round narrative rather than performance because we have an older (isn) target audience we feel like we want to base our narrative round how relationships are seen to teenage girls and how relationships can develop and turn into unhealthy relationships. rather than go for the normal boy girl 'fall in love'  music video.

Taylor Swift - i knew you were trouble lyrics

Once upon a time a few mistakes ago
I was in your sights, you got me alone
You found me, you found me, you found me
I guess you didn't care, and I guess I liked that
And when I fell hard you took a step back
Without me, without me, without me

And he's long gone when he's next to me
And I realize the blame is on me

'Cause I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
'Til you put me down, oh
I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
Now I'm lying on the cold hard ground
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble

No apologies. He'll never see you cry,
Pretends he doesn't know that he's the reason why.
You're drowning, you're drowning, you're drowning.
Now I heard you moved on from whispers on the street
A new notch in your belt is all I'll ever be
And now I see, now I see, now I see

He was long gone when he met me
And I realize the joke is on me, yeah!

I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
'Til you put me down, oh
I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
Now I'm lying on the cold hard ground
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble

And the saddest fear comes creeping in
That you never loved me or her, or anyone, or anything, yeah

I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
'Til you put me down, oh
I knew you were trouble when you walked in (you were right there, you were right there)
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
Now I'm lying on the cold hard ground
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble
Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble

I knew you were trouble when you walked in
Trouble, trouble, trouble
I knew you were trouble when you walked in
Trouble, trouble, trouble

i dont know if you know who you are until you lose who you are.

tracking an artist throughout their career (Avril Lavigne)

I have chosen to track Avril Lavigne throughout her career in the music industry, i feel that Avril is an inspiration to young girls, in 1999 Avril was discovered by her first ever professional manager whilst singing country covers at a book store near to where she lived,  Above i have included her albums and what albums she released in what year and the lead single for every album underneath the dates.

what is an Digipak?

A Digipak is patented style of packaging used for CD singles or albums and DVD's , digipaks consist of a gatefold (book style) paperboard outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding CD's or DVD's. Digipaks were first created by mead westvaco and their product called (digipak) is trademarked.

Target audience (Voki)

Here is an idea of what i imagine my target audience would look like,
speak like, sound like, and what her general personality would be.
Sarah is a typically girly girl who loves to hang out with her
friends. the Voki give people an in sight into what her hobbies
are and what type of music video's she like and why she likes them.
This has helped me to identify what target audience i want my
music video to be for.

analysis of previous students work

WWW: I think that the narrative is really well presented and was
thought in dept about in order to make it clear and understood.
They were creative and experimented with different shot types
which worked well for them. The pace of the shots were cut
accordingly to the pace of the song so i fitted well and didn't
look odd.

EBI: I think that they didn't put much thought into the lightening as
in some shots the lightening looked poor quality which impacted
there video overall. although they used a variety of different shots
they were a bit slack on them, their framing could of been improved.

WWW: I Think in this video you can definitely see that there miss
en scene was thought about and planned in detail which paid off
in their video as there locations were effective and creative which
fitted well within the video. also there costumes were really detailed
and made the video look professional.

EBI: i think because it was so clear they thought indept about their
mise en scene, it seems that there narrative was a bit confusing at
times and unclear, i also do not really get why they used certain
effects and what they wanted to gain from those effects.

WWW: I think that they narrative fitted really well with there chosen
genre and their location and costumes highlighted the narrative well
i can see that they have used Andrew godwin theory when the lyrics
say about a gunshot. i also think they were creative with there effects.

EBI: i think they could have used a variety of different shot types
as they only really used a mid shot which look our attentions
else where. The performers were unclear as i think they
changed lead singers half way through. and i think they could
have focused more on their lip syncing

WWW: I think that the narrative was really well thought about
and creative. they used a variety of different shot types which
made the video a lot more interesting to watch. The narrative
also fitted well with the lyrics in the song.

EBI: i personally think there could of been a bit more
performance in the video, there was a lot of narrative which worked
well but we didn't see a lot of performance. i think they could of
improved there costumes making them a bit more creative and also
in some shots the lightening could have been focused on and improved.

inspiration and influences

Above i have pick a few film trailers and music video's that personally i think are really good either music videos or films, i think that all of the above are going influence me when making my own music video because of there excellence creative narrative, each individual  one above have there similarities and can be linked with each other but at the same time they are complete contrasts.all of these are fairly recent in either the film or music industry and i think tackle problems in todays society which therefore has a tremendous impact on the fan and viewers that watch the music video's and films.

conventions of a music video

By doing this task it has helped me to have an in sight into what makes a music video, after analysing shots in various music video's i have been able to identify key features that i will need to use when making my own music video in order for it to be successful and what conventions are used in each music video.

history of music video

Since Queen released the first ever music video the way music is listened to has changed. Due to music video's people not only listen to music they see it as well, before music video's it was very much to so based on the artist and lyrics, now its more focused on the narrative of music video's and the story they tell.

in the 1970's to the 1990's music videos were very much based on focusing mainly on the artist and performance and had no narrative in them. as the years have gone on technogoly has developed making it easier to make music video of better equality and in much more detail, so much more recently music video's have increased narrative and much less performance. narrative draws attention to the audience watching the music video's especially now as with all the new technology music video producers are able to make more complicated video's and edits etc.  i think that personally the most inspirational music video's are the older ones for example Sinead o'connor because videos like this one attract a massive audience but do not have a lot of narrative but its the lyrics, meaning and performance that make the music video a classic inspirational video.

Todorov's narrative theory

Todorov in 1969 produced a theory which he believed to be able to be applied to any film. He believed that all films followed the same narrative pattern. They all went through stages called the equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement, solving and again equilibrium.

There are five stages the narrative can progress through:
1. A state of equilibrium (All is as it should be.)
2. A disruption of that order by an event.
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred.
4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption.
5. A return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium

A film that follow these steps perfectly is Die Hard.

1. Bruce Willis is coming home to his family for Christmas and all is calm. (The equilibrium)
2. Alan Rickman and his team of terrorists take over the nakatomi building which is hosting a Christmas part of which McClane and his wife are attending.
3. (2 points of recognition) McClane isn't in the room when the terrorsits storm in so is able to move up the builiding when he hears screaming. People outside of the building realise there's a disruption when a police man's car is shot at from the building.
4. The police try sending in a SWAT team in which fails. The situation is solved by John McClane throwing Gruber out of a high floor window which kills him.
5. The equilibrium is restored when the police got McClane, his wife and the other hostages out of the building, and the McClanes leave in a police car.

On the other hand, you can't apply the theory to all films.

for example 'the fight club' does not follow Todorov theory.

mini music video

Review of task

I think this task has benifited me hugely as i worked independantly on the project  using other peoples footage was something i struggled with and found really difficult  therefore finding it hard to  cut up the clips and sync he music. But now i am alot more confident with doing those tasks although before i had a basic understanding of how to use adobe premiere pro, i have now developed my tecnhiques to a higher level. And now feel alot more confident when i will  make and edit my own music video.

Carol vernallis theory

Carol vernallis main points are that:

Editing in traditional fiction on tv follows the rules of continuity which music videos break in order to draw the viewers attention.

Special effects such as wipes and transition are common in music videos and can be really obvious to observer when used.

The short time limit of music videos means that the jump cuts keep the narrative of the video quick and short but still interesting, for this reason jump cuts are very popular within music videos.

Master shots are used to give the video structure.

lips syncing review

whilst creating our short video of taylor swfit, our task was to lip sync eachother singing her song 'never getting back together' i feel like from this task i have learnt lots of important factors when making a music video for example we soon found out thar it would of been impossible to sync up the song unless when we were actually videoing eachother we had the long playing out loud and the performer was also sining the song aloud. other factor we found out we had to do was to sing the whole song. whilst doing our task we found out that there was lots of things we may have to avoid in order to make the lip syncing workshop successful for exaample we tried not to use long shots as its hard to sync, and that having the confidence whilst filmimg as it will make your performance look 100% better and adding narrative that fits the either the lyrics or song. we also learnt that having framing and composition for example shots that perhaps fit the narrative as you have to beware of the surroudnings making sure that it wouldnt effecr your filming.

skills development

How have my skills been developed in AS and how could they be improved in A2?

 Research and planning
At the start of AS my research and planning skills were very vague throughout the project i learnt more on how to develop my research and planning skills as i knew the more in dept i went with it, it would help me later on in making my project. As i was still developing my research and planning skills through the AS i feel like i could further improve by making sure that all research and planning are fully completed before starting the production of my project as this would benefit me in the future, i also feel like i could of explored different types of genres before deciding on a specific one for our project which could of gave us a lot of variety for our project.

Using conventions from real media texts

I feel like using conventions from real media texts during AS was definitely one of my stronger skills that i developed, as i feel like i done this thoroughly i noticed the impact it had on the production of my project e.g. making it a lot easier knowing the conventions from real media texts that i focused on before making our project which paid off at later stages in the project. although i am very positive about using conventions from real media texts there are still improvements that can be made to help me during A2.

digital technology

Creativity
Creativity is area that i tend to struggle with as i am not a creative person, AS has helped me to develop those skills using various websites and ways to present my work for my project. whilst being creative with the ways i present my work, my knowledge on using certain websites such as prezi and pixton is at a minimum, in order to help me at A2 i would like to develop my knowledge and how to use the websites successful and independently. this would definitely be a main area of improvement for me.

Post production
As much as i enjoyed the post production of my project, my camera and editing skills were again vague although i had pervious practise at GCSE my skills then were still very basic so i found editing and filming quite a difficult task at the start but as the project went on i had more practise and my skills gradually developed. Now at the end of AS and beginning of A2 my skills can still be developed in order to be successful in A2, to help me during A2 i would like to develop my photoshop skills as i think that would really help my project when it comes to post production.
